Why does the S24 Ultra feature a 200MP main camera and a 10MP 3x zoom camera?

Hello everyone,
The S24 Ultra’s main camera supports optical zoom up to 4 times at 4K resolution, which makes it seem unusual that Samsung didn’t include a 5x or 10x zoom camera. However, the upcoming S25 Ultra is rumored to have a 50MP 3x lens and a 50MP ultrawide, possibly for optical 8K video.

A 10MP camera is sufficient for most purposes (since 8MP is enough for 4K shots), and the 200MP camera is mostly a marketing gimmick.

That’s not entirely accurate. The 200MP camera does offer more detail in daylight and well-lit conditions compared to the 12MP camera. While it might not be a reason to switch phones, it’s not just a marketing gimmick if it actually improves photo quality.

The S24 Ultra features a 50MP periscope telephoto lens that provides optical zoom up to 5x. It utilizes both telephoto lenses for zooming capabilities.

Ice Universe has leaked the camera specs for the S25 Ultra. The 3x camera remains at 10MP, and the 5x and 1x sensors are unchanged. The only upgrade is to the ultrawide sensor, which has increased to 50MP, though the sensor size is almost the same.

If I could choose, the ideal telephoto setup would be a 50MP 3x sensor (providing good results for digital zoom up to the periscope sensor’s zoom level) and a 6x or 10x high-megapixel periscope sensor for long-range zoom. However, this would mean losing the 5x portrait capability present on the S24 Ultra.

I hope the sensor size can be increased and the focal length reduced.
