I currently have an iPhone and am deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem. While I like Apple products, I don’t enjoy feeling stuck within the ecosystem. I’ve always been interested in the Z Flip, and with the Z Flip 6 offering better battery life, I’m considering switching to Android. My main concern is whether it’s worth the switch, as I also own a MacBook and iPad. I could use alternatives like Google Photos to replicate the iCloud experience, but having grown up with Apple, transitioning to Android’s UI might be challenging for me. One thing I don’t like about Apple is how it limits customization, especially with home screen aesthetics.
So, for Android users—would you make the switch from Apple to Android for your phone?
Edit: Thanks for the quick responses, everyone! I’ll visit a store to try one out and see how it feels. Many mentioned the lack of FaceTime and texting on a laptop, but I don’t use those features much anyway.
What an interesting place to ask this question! I feel qualified to answer since I recently switched from the iPhone 15 Pro to the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The UX on Android does take some getting used to, and while Android offers far more customization than iOS, you’ll need to find replacements for some of the convenient features iOS provides. For example, I relied heavily on reachability with iPhones, which isn’t natively available on Android, but you can find apps to mimic that feature. My advice is to visit a Samsung store, spend 15-20 minutes with the phone, and see how it feels for you.
The only downside to switching for me is losing iMessage and the ability to cast to Apple TV. However, I’m done spending any more money on Apple products.
Switching can be challenging, but once you get used to Android, you probably won’t want to go back. In my experience, Android “just works” and is easier to navigate, making it much simpler overall.
The feature I miss most from Apple is the larger keys for texting, especially in landscape mode. The Apple keyboard has a globe icon that lets you easily switch between English, Spanish, and Bitmoji keyboards. Apple also made it simpler to view stored passwords.
I use an S24 Ultra and have an iPad and MacBook. I can use either if I need to FaceTime someone and I don’t really care for getting texts on either because they’re primarily work devices and that’s a distraction for me. You’re right I just use Google things for the important stuff (Drive, photos, Gmail, etc)
