Hey everyone, I’m considering getting the Samsung S24+ but I’ve been hearing that Apple devices last longer than Samsung. I’m wondering about your experiences with Samsung phones over time (even though the S24 just came out). When I say longevity, I mean how long the phone lasts before it stops working properly or becomes hard to use (battery health and all that). Thanks for your thoughts!
I’m still using a Galaxy S9 and the main problem I have is that the charging port has become a bit unreliable. I’ve never changed the battery, and it still does everything I need it to do. The only issue is that it can’t handle newer games, but honestly, that would be the case for any 7-year-old iPhone too. The camera could be better, but it’s the same for any 7-year-old phone. If the newer models are similar, the phone should last a long time if you take care of it. Also, Samsung and Google now offer software updates for a similar length of time as Apple.

The charge port has failed on every Samsung I’ve kept long term. Even with USB-C, this issue didn’t go away. Does the S9 support wireless charging?

Yes, it does. I haven’t tried it yet because the charge port still works fine, and I usually only charge my phone once a day. It’s still annoying, though. I could get the port replaced for under $100 or try wireless charging for under $20, but I’m considering upgrading soon because of the age of the phone.
@Sky
Probably a silly question, but have you tried cleaning out the charging port? It could be full of lint.

I have the same issue with my S21 FE. Took it in, and they said the port needed replacement. I thought it was just lint too, but no. They wanted $75 to fix it, so I might just trade it in as is.
My Galaxy S10+ is still going strong. Longevity isn’t a problem, especially since Samsung says it will provide updates for 7 years.

I’m not sure about the security on your phone, you might want to consider upgrading soon.
@Harley
I’m planning to get the S25 Ultra next year.
Hey, I’m currently using the S24+ as my daily phone and an iPhone 15 Pro for work. I really like the S24+ and feel like it’s going to last me for a while. I traded my S23 Ultra for it. Battery is great, and I haven’t had any problems. The rounded edges are nice too—it feels good in the hand. The size is perfect, but I do wish it was a little smaller. Overall, I love it. Just test it out in person. If you like it, go for it. Don’t let others sway you just because it’s Android.
@Skyler
An iPhone 15 Pro as your work phone? You must have money to burn!
Both Apple and Samsung are good now. My dad still uses an iPhone 11, and I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max. They both run smoothly. I just bought an S24 Ultra (it hasn’t arrived yet) because I’m running out of storage on my iPhone. So really, just pick the OS that you prefer.
RAM plays a big part in how long a phone lasts. The Samsung S21 Ultra from 2021 has 12GB of RAM, while the iPhone 16 (2024) has only 8GB of RAM.
I’m still using my S8 every day. The battery doesn’t last as long as it used to, but Samsung now offers just as many software updates as Apple.
I’m not sure, but I have an S9 (about 6-7 years old?) lying around. It still works but I don’t use it much. I know someone with an S8 who uses it for basic tasks, and it still works fine. Older iPhones should be the same. But honestly, every phone will have its duds. How long do people really keep a smartphone? If it’s just 4 years, both Apple and Samsung should be fine for that time.
Samsung now provides 7 years of OS updates, which is more than my iPhone 11 is getting from Apple. Their premium phones last a long time too. I have both, but I’ve switched to using my Galaxy more because it just works better for me. You don’t have to worry about it not lasting.
My old S9+ still works perfectly fine. I used it a couple of months ago when my A71 got water damage. It worked like a charm.
I’ve been using an S8+ since 2017. It’s never had any issues in 7 years—no hardware or battery problems. The only problem is some apps no longer support it, but that’s a software issue, not the phone itself.
@Whit
Same here! Some apps no longer work, which is annoying. I just hope my banking app doesn’t stop working soon because it only supports newer versions of Android. For now, I can still get by, but I hope the banking app doesn’t force me to upgrade.
I have an A5 2017 on my shelf that I used for a week. It still works fine, and it wasn’t even a flagship model.
