I’m thinking about getting the Tab S10 Ultra for my studies in university. I’ll be starting next year, but I’m already taking some classes this year. Right now, I have an Asus Vivobook, but I miss taking notes the old-fashioned way and writing directly on my course material. My mom also needs a new laptop, so she would buy my old one. I’m also a musician, so I’d use it for reading sheet music too. But, I’m worried that using a tablet might limit me from using the apps I need for my studies (psychology). Any students here who can share their experience with using a tablet for university?
A tablet can help a lot with note-taking and organizing. Since you already have a laptop, I’d suggest you go for the 10+ or 9+ models, because the Ultra might be harder to handle for daily tasks.
Also, tablets aren’t the best for gaming. You can do it, but it’s not the most comfortable experience.
As for scrolling through TikTok or watching Reels, most people prefer doing that on their phone, not a tablet.
Go ahead and get the tablet if you want! If you’re still worried, you could consider E-Ink tablets, which are only for notes and don’t allow other apps or colors. Could be a better fit for focused work.
A tablet could be useful, but personally, I wouldn’t want to rely on an Android device as my main device for classwork.
Windows + keyboard + mouse is what I’m used to, and I think it works best. A tablet and stylus could be a good addition, but not a replacement for a full laptop setup.
I’m not sure about psychology specifically, but I know that it involves things like statistics and possibly some programming. You’ll probably need a laptop for that. If you’re on a budget and can’t afford the S10 Ultra, I’d recommend the Tab S6 Lite. It’s cheaper and still has a pen for note-taking, so it should be fine for that.
Definitely get a tablet for uni though! It’ll make things much easier.
I’m a 5th-semester psychology student, and I mostly use my Windows laptop. A lot of my friends use iPads or Galaxy Tabs, and they do fine. I thought about getting a Galaxy Tab for college, but I decided to stick with my laptop for now. I don’t see the point in getting a tablet since it would do the same things my laptop does.
That’s a good point, I see where you’re coming from. I’d also use the tablet for other things like reading sheet music and entertainment. The only thing that’s holding me back is the software I might need for psychology—stuff like statistics software that might not be available for Android.
Now that you mention it, we use open-source stats software like Jamovi (you can check it out). We also use Atlas.ti for qualitative research. Unfortunately, those programs are only available on Windows (not sure about Mac, but definitely not on Android or iPadOS).
